Waterproof & Fireproof Safes

Water- and fireproof safes provide a secure way for a person to protect his valuables in the event of a flood, fire or burglary attempt.
  1. Significance

    • Common items protected by safes include cash, jewelry and important documents. Others may choose to store sentimental items in their safe.

    Theft

    • Safes are also a great protection against theft and burglary. Many safes have concealed hinges so that individuals are unable to pry the safe open. In addition, almost all safes have combination security locks.

    Function

    • A safe that is fire- and waterproof should be able to withstand external temperatures of up to 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit. Using watertight seals during the construction creates waterproof safes. Such safes are also constructed so that they will float during a flood.

    Maintenance

    • Some safes require scheduled maintenance. Waterproof safes often come with desiccant packs designed to absorb moisture. Waterproof safes are also air tight, so individuals must open the safe once a month to provide it with oxygen. Without desiccant packs and regular opening, trapped humidity in the safe could make documents and valuables damp and cultivate mildew.

    Considerations

    • According to USA Today, interest in home safes grows during financial meltdowns and economic turmoil. Such purchases are often associated with feelings of fear and an interest in self-reliance.
