Types of Safe Locks

Digital Keypad

• Digital keypads, also referred to as electronic locks, require you to enter a numeric code to lock and unlock the safe. The manufacturer typically determines the number of digits to enter. A variety of safes with electronic locks are available, such as homes safes, hotels safes, gun safes and office safes. In addition, if someone enters the wrong code back to back, the safe automatically temporarily disables for about 10 minutes.

Manual Keys

• Safes with manual keys are typically the least secure because thieves can easily break the locks. However, some safes include manual keys along with another type of safe lock for extra security. If you purchase a safe with a manual lock, make additional copies of the keys in case you lose the original keys.

Biometric Fingerprint Lock

• A highly advanced safe lock is the biometric fingerprint locking system. This type of locking system locks and unlocks the safe by reading a fingerprint. The lock can store a certain amount of fingerprints of those you want to access the safe. Some biometric fingerprint safes feature a tracking system with a time and date stamp of the people who access the safe. In addition, the biometric fingerprint safe may require a manual key or code for added security.

Combination Lock

• The combination lock is one of the oldest locking devices. Most of the time, this common type of safe requires a three-digit combination to unlock the safe. The majority of manufacturers pre-set the combination, and you cannot alter the digits. If you misplace the combination, usually you can provide a serial number to the manufacturer to retrieve the combination.
