How to Open a Fire Safe

A fire safe is designed both for protection and for the security of the valuables stored inside. Fire safes are built to withstand high temperatures so the contents, such as important documents, remain below the flashpoint of 451 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the temperature at which paper ignites. This is the protection factor. The locking mechanism on the safe is the security factor. Most consumer fire safes are equipped with two types of lock, either a key lock, a combination lock or both types built into the safe for added security. Keep the key and the written combination number in a secure location until you're ready to open the safe.

Press inward on the latch beneath the door on a fire safe that opens vertically, or on the right-hand side on a safe that opens horizontally, like a refrigerator. Raise the safe door or pull outward on a horizontal door to access the contents inside.
