The Best Way to Move a Gun Safe

A gun safe can give you a convenient way to store your valuables, but there is nothing convenient about moving the gun safe itself. Part of the security of a gun safe comes from its weight. No burglar will ever be able to do a simple "smash and grab" with your gun safe. Unfortunately, it also makes it difficult to move it for perfectly legitimate reasons. Don't be discouraged, though. If you use caution and good sense when it comes time to move your gun safe, you should be able to complete the task.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the contents of the gun safe. It will be heavy enough without the added weight of your valuables bogging it down. Store them in another safe location until you finish moving the safe.

    • 2

Examine the underside of the gun safe for bolts. If you have bolted your gun safe to the floor for added security, you will need to detach the bolts from the inside before you continue.

    • 3

Tilt the gun safe to one side and have a friend or family member wedge the flat part of a utility dolly under the upturned legs of the safe. Set the safe back down, and then pull the dolly back so that the safe tilts and rests against the back of the dolly.

    • 4

Lash the gun safe to the dolly using sturdy bungee cables. Even though the cables will work to secure the gun safe, you may still want to have some assistants hold the gun safe steady as you wheel it around on the dolly.

    • 5

Straighten the dolly once you reach the new location for the gun safe. This should put the safe almost level with the floor. Shimmy the lip of the dolly out from under the safe.

    • 6

Push the gun safe into its proper position.
