Pros and Cons of a Fireproof Safe

When you leave your home for a dinner out, the last thing you want to see when you get home is the sight of your house burned down, knowing that all of your valuables inside are burned. Fireproof safes help ensure that does not happen to your most important belongings. However, certain cons to owning a fireproof safe should be considered along with the pros.
  1. Size

    • The size of the safe is both a pro and a con. These safes come in different sizes, which means that you can get one large enough in which to fit all of your important belongings. However, this also means that it may be too heavy to put in some places. If you want to put it on an elevated floor, then you may want to consult an engineer to make sure that the floor can handle not only the weight of the safe, but also the contents you are putting inside.

    Electronics or Paper

    • You can get safes that protect electronics or paper. The safe gets hot due to the fire, but the temperature at which paper bursts into flames is higher than the temperature at which electronics will melt. This means that if you unknowingly get a paper fire safe, then you may lose important electronic data. Make sure that you verify what can be kept in the safe.

    Shelves

    • One con of fireproof safes is that they often do not come with shelves. Anything that you need to place in the interior of the safe, which may be required to effectively store something, must be bought on your own. You can get special padding made if you are concerned about delicate objects in the safe.

    Security

    • The security systems on fireproof safes are a definite pro. Safes come in a variety of security levels, so you can choose which you think is most necessary. Ask lots of questions to make sure that you are making the right choice of lock.

    Fireproof

    • An obvious pro, but yet a con of fireproof safes is that, while they are about 99 percent fireproof, they are not 100 percent fireproof. While they do not offer complete protection, they do still provide peace of mind that when you leave, your things will most likely be safe.
