Roundworms lay eggs in soil and humans can ingest the roundworms by touching their mouth with their hands before they are washed. Certain types of roundworms can enter the human body through contact with the skin. Roundworms travel through the body to the lungs, liver and other vital organs.
Pinworms are also known as threadworms. Pinworms are the most common type of roundworm found in warmer climates and affect children most often. Pinworms are usually found around the rectum or in the stool. The symptoms associated with pinworms are itching around the anus, insomnia and restlessness.
Another type of roundworm, Ascaris lumbricoides, is a large intestinal parasite. Infection with this type of roundworm is most often found in areas with tropical climates and in residents with poor hygiene. Symptoms of Ascaris lumbricoides infection include pain in the abdomen, coughing, difficulty breathing and intestinal blockages. The presence of many of these roundworms can result in pneumonia.
