How to Open a Lockbox Without a Key

A lockbox wraps around a doorknob and holds a key within it. The key is usually used to open the door it is hanging from. Real estate agents representing a seller use lockboxes so agents with a prospective buyer can gain access to the house without having to drive to the selling agent's office. You do not need a key to open the lockbox because it has a combination lock.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the real estate agent listed on the property your buyer would like to see. Ask him for the code to the lockbox. If you have his email address, you can email him instead of calling. For privacy reasons, the lockbox code will not appear on the listing.

    • 2

Turn the numbers on the lockbox dial one dial at a time (there will either be three or four dials) until the correct ones are lined up. If the lockbox has a dial like you would find on a high school locker, turn it clockwise for three full rotations and stop on the first number in the combination. Then turn the knob counterclockwise past the number you just stopped on until you reach the second number. Go clockwise once more until you reach the third number.

    • 3

Slide the lever on the lockbox from the left to the right or from the top to the bottom, depending on the model. The lever is most commonly located above the numbers, although it can be on the side.

    • 4

Open the lockbox by pulling the top out and down. Make sure you are still holding the lever as you pull. Some lockboxes have a lid that you lift off after you hold the lever in the release position.

    • 5

Remove the key to the house.
