Locks, Safes & Security

Regardless of their economic situation, security is a concern for all homeowners. Locks, safes and security services are the most common methods that people use to keep their families, homes and valuables safe.
  1. Locks

    • Locks come in many forms, from the simple keyed padlock to advanced electronic systems that rely on fingerprints or voice recognition for operation. Because most padlocks can be destroyed easily, they are best used on gates to limit access to certain areas.

Modern U.S. homes are commonly equipped with keyed or simple electric locks that unlock when a programmed code is entered on a numbered keypad. Most exterior entry doors are also equipped with a deadlock, which is a solid bolt that helps prevent the door from being kicked in. If a burglar really wants to get in, windows are much easier to penetrate than doors.

    Safes

    • Three types of safes are commonly found in homes: gun safes, fireproof safes and anti-theft safes. As the name suggests, gun safes are designed to store a homeowner's gun collection safely. Most gun safes are also fireproof. Fireproof safes are typically small and designed to protect important paperwork in a fire. Fireproof safes are rated according to the effectiveness with which they maintain internal temperatures below damaging levels when exposed to 1,700-degree heat for one to three hours. Theft-proof safes, designed to protect valuables, are often also fireproof, but feature more sophisticated locks and heavier frames.

    Security Services

    • Security services are available in most urban and suburban areas. Services vary from monitored alarm systems to patrol guards. Most alarm systems rely on window and door sensors that require a pass code to disarm a response from the security company, and they generally require a monthly or yearly service agreement.
