How to Choose Home Safes

When it comes to choosing a home safe, it's important to know what you want, and what you need, before you dive into the sea of options. The more specific you are as to how much protection you need and what you can afford, the more likely you are to be pleased with your choice of home safe.

Decide the parameters that your safe has to meet. For instance, decide the safe's fire resistance; whether it should be a stand-alone, wall, floor or ceiling safe; whether the safe must be portable or mobile; how much you can fit in the safe; how much you're willing to pay for the safe; and whether the safe is electronic, key-based or combination-based. All of these options should be weighed before you start shopping so you can figure out what's most important to you.

Shop for a safe that fits the parameters you've set. For instance, if you're willing to pay $500 for a combination-locked fire safe with a high rating, and no mobility, to store important papers in, then you know what you need. Keep an open mind when you look at safe options, in case you find something more suited to your needs.

Buy the safe that best fits your needs. With wall or floor safes, the purchase price might not include installation, so make sure to ask.
