How to Reprogram a Sargent & Greenleaf Combination Lock

Sargent and Greenleaf has been providing mechanical combination locks to financial institutions, businesses and governments since 1857. After a qualified safe technician has installed a Sargent and Greenleaf combination lock on your safe, you should periodically change the combination to ensure the security of your valuables. You should also consider reprogramming the combination if someone who knows it no longer has authority to access the safe, such as after a personnel change. Reprogramming the safe entails a few simple steps.

Instructions

  1. Open the Lock

    • 1

Rotate the dial left until the first number of the combination aligns with the opening index mark the fourth time. The opening index mark is located at the twelve o'clock position.

    • 2

Rotate the dial right until the second number of the combination aligns with the opening index mark the third time.

    • 3

Rotate the dial left until the third number of the combination aligns with the opening index mark the second time.

    • 4

Rotate the dial right until it stops, at about "95." If the dial doesn't stop at about "95," repeat the opening sequence, being careful to stop the dial at precisely the number of the combination.

    • 5

      Open the safe door.

    Change the Combination

    • 6

Rotate the dial left until the first number of the combination aligns with the changing index mark the fourth time. The changing index mark is located at the eleven o'clock position.

    • 7

Rotate the dial right until the second number of the combination aligns with the changing index mark the third time. Rotate the dial left until the third number of the combination aligns with the changing index mark the second time.

    • 8

Insert the included changing tool, a curved piece of metal, into the opening in the lock's cover. It can only fit one way, so you might have to wiggle it around a little until the tool's wing, a small piece of metal, is completely inside the lock case. Rotate the tool about 90 degrees counterclockwise (it can only turn in this direction). You will feel a release of tension with the tool.

    • 9

Rotate the dial left until the first new number of the combination aligns with the changing index mark the fourth time. Rotate the dial right until the second new number of the combination aligns with the changing index mark the third time. Rotate the dial left until the third new number of the combination aligns with the changing index mark the second time.

    • 10

Rotate the dial right about ten numbers. The combination is now reset. Rotate the changing tool clockwise about 90 degrees to the same position it was in when you first inserted it, and them pull it out of the lock's cover. Keep the door open until you have successfully checked the new combination at least three times.

    Check the New Combination

    • 11

Rotate the dial left until the first number of the new combination aligns with the opening index mark the fourth time.

    • 12

Rotate the dial right until the second number of the combination aligns with the opening index mark the third time.

    • 13

Rotate the dial left until the third number of the combination aligns with the opening index mark the second time.

    • 14

Rotate the dial right. It should come to a stop in less than one rotation. If the dial does not stop, repeat the entire opening procedure at least twice before calling a qualified safe technician. Do not consider that you have successfully changed the combination until you have successfully tried the combination at least three times. Only then should you feel confident about closing the safe door. To re-lock the combination lock, rotate the dial four times to any non-combination number.
