How to Open Sentry Fire Safes

A house fire can destroy not only your physical home, but also important links to your life. Several important documents in our lives -- such as birth certificates, social security cards, wills, deeds, family pictures and rental or lease agreements -- are most often printed on easily-burned paper. Many of those documents are one of a kind, with no backup copies in existence. Companies like Sentry manufacture fire-proof safes for home and small business use, and all you need do is open the safe after the fire is out to find your valuables intact.

Instructions

  1. Combination Lock

    • 1

Make sure the safe handle is in the neutral horizontal position. Insert your safe key into the keyhole and rotate the key until the plunger pops out. Remove the safe key.

    • 2

Turn the combination lock to the left. Rotate the "0" mark on the lock past the pointer at least three times, then pause when the pointer aligns with the line corresponding to the first number of the combination code.

    • 3

Rotate the lock to the right. Move the second digit of the combination code past the pointer one time, then pause the next time the pointer aligns with second digit of the combination code.

    • 4

Rotate the lock to the left. Stop turning immediately when the third number of the combination code is aligned with the indicator line. The lock will unlatch.

    • 5

Lower the safe handle to open the Sentry fire safe.

    Electronic Lock

    • 6

Make sure the safe handle is in the neutral horizontal position. Insert your safe key into the keyhole and rotate the key until the plunger pops out. Remove the safe key.

    • 7

Dial in the five-digit factory code for the safe or the five-digit unlock code you've previously programmed into the safe. The lock unlatches and the LED light turns green immediately on basic models. Press "Prog/Enter" if you are using a more advanced safe and the light doesn't turn green after the last digit of the unlock code is pressed.

    • 8

Lower the safe handle within four seconds of the lock unlatching and the LED light turning green. Repeat the process if you fail to open the safe before it locks again.

    • 9

Press "Clear" at any time if you make a mistake and need to re-enter the code from the beginning of the combination.
