Digital Key Safe Warnings

A digital key safe is a special kind of safe that is designed to secure a "spare key" for a vehicle, home or other building. The safe has an electronic lock that can only be opened with a secret code. This gives trusted individuals and rescue workers the ability to access and use the spare key in the event of an emergency.
  1. Key Safe Code

    • Your digital key safe lock can only be opened with a secret combination code. You must set this code before you use the safe. Choose a code that cannot be easily guessed by an intruder. Codes like "123456" or "00000" should be avoided. Don't use famous dates in history or birthdates that unauthorized persons might know. Remember that anyone who knows the code can access and use the spare key.

Do not forget or lose your combination code. Some digital key safe manufacturers have security measures in place that prevent them from being able to recover your code if you forget or lose it.

If someone that you no longer trust knows the code to your digital key safe, change the code immediately. When changing the code, make sure that you notify security personnel and other authorized persons of the new code.

    Installation

    • If your digital key safe is not properly installed, it may not be secure. Have the key safe installed by a professional. If it is to be used for a house key, install the key safe in a location that is not readily visible to an interloper. Tell only those who need to know that you have a key safe. Make sure the key safe is securely fastened in place. The commotion of breaking open the key safe may deter intruders, but if the safe can be removed and taken to a secluded location, it can be easily broken open.

    Power Requirement

    • Remember that a digital key safe requires electricity. If the power fails, it might not be possible to open the safe. Ensure that the power to the key safe cannot be interrupted. Ideally, select a model that is designed to function even during blackouts.
