How to Open a Safe With an Electronic Lock

If you own valuable jewelry, firearms, money or important documents, you may require a secure place for their storage. An electronic combination safe provides protection for your valuable belongings, allowing only those who know the code to open the safe's door. Some safes also provide fire protection, which shields the items inside from extreme heat or flames. Almost all combination safes, regardless of brand, are opened in the same way. Opening a safe requires users to enter a several-digit combination using an electronic keypad.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the factory combination if you have never used the safe before. This is often all zeroes, or a series of sequential numbers, such as "1-2-3-4."

    • 2

Enter your own combination if you have used the safe before and previously set your combination. The code is typically between three to eight digits long. If the code does not work, you may need to hit the "#" key before entering the numbers.

    • 3

Turn the safe's handle within several seconds after entering the code to enter the safe. Often, if the handle is not turned quickly enough, the safe locks again. Depending on your safe, you may turn the handle either left or right. This causes the door to open.
