How to Set a 3 Cam Combination Lock

If you're keeping something valuable behind a three-cam combination lock, changing the combination regularly helps to keep your item secure. Three-cam combination locks are locks with a three number code to release them. The code is displayed to the user through numbers, but the number dial actually controls three "cams" inside the lock that control the locking mechanism. Setting a new code on a three cam combination lock is easy to do, and the process is similar for most three-cam locks.

Instructions

    • 1

Input your combination using the number dial on the front of the lock. Standard combination locks have this operated by one individual dial, but other models (similar to briefcase locks) may have three separate number dials. The code can only be set when the lock is open. If you don't remember the code, it may not be possible to set a new one. Either try to work out the code (see Resources) or contact a professional to open the lock.

    • 2

Open the lock. This may have to be done in a different way than how you would normally open the lock, depending on the individual lock. Some models have a mark to line the numbers up with to open and a separate mark to use if you're going to change the combination. To change the combination, you would need to line up each number with the change mark in order to open the lock to change the combination.

    • 3

Insert your change key into the lock. The change key is required to wipe the old code from the cams, and has to be inserted (generally into the back of the lock) into the relevant slot and turned counter-clockwise a quarter of a revolution. Leave the change key in place as you set the new code.

    • 4

Turn the dial counter-clockwise to begin setting your new code. Pass your desired number three times, and then stop on it the fourth time around. This has to be done to set the furthest back of the three cams rotating.

    • 5

Turn the dial clockwise, passing the desired second number twice before stopping on it the third time around.

    • 6

Rotate the dial counter-clockwise again, passing the desired third number once and settling on it the second time around. This sets the final number in your code. Leave the third number selected.

    • 7

Turn the change key clockwise a quarter of a revolution, so it returns to its original position. The change key can now be removed from its slot to set the new combination.

    • 8

Test the combination out, entering the three numbers in the same way as when you set it. The only difference when opening is that after you've entered the three numbers, you have to turn the dial clockwise to "0" or as far as it will go, to open the lock.
