Cheap Hiding Spaces

• There are several ways to hide your safe that are cheap and efficient to purchase. Smart Money Daily and The Simple Dollar both claim that hiding money and valuables is easiest when they are in an unobtrusive spot that is actually in plain sight. Clocks with hollow backs and books with hollow interiors are manufactured to accommodate small safes. Economy-sized jars are manufactured without a bottom or with a removable bottom. These jars are often painted on the interior and are labeled as peanut butter or another common item but can fit small safes inside. Prices for these hiding spaces vary by manufacturer and seller but are well under $25 as of January 2011.

Expensive Hiding Spaces

• Hiding safes in plain sight may be expensive, especially if you have a larger safe or wish to purchase a more sophisticated hiding mechanism designed specifically to subterfuge those looking for your safe. Paintings are made with a safe attached to the back of the painting. You must install the painting on your wall so the safe is recessed in the wall and the painting covers the safe. Also available for purchase are safes that look like electrical outlets and can only be accessed by unscrewing the "outlet" from the wall. Prices on these products vary but as of January 2011 are often more than $25.

DIY Hiding Spots

• If you don't feel that spending even a few dollars for a hiding spot is necessary, you can easily make a hiding spot from simple household items. For instance, a small safe can be hidden in your garage or kitchen without attracting any attention by placing it in an empty soda can box. You can also hide your safe underneath blankets or towels in the linen closet or in an empty box labeled as frozen lasagna or burgers in your freezer.

Tips

• Don't hide your safe inside something that is valuable. For instance, if you have an old stereo system, large vase or sarcophagus, do not place a safe inside it. If you happen to be burgled, you may find that the intruder will take valuable items not knowing they contain a safe.
