You have important documents stored in your Sentry 1170 safe, but you can't get them because the key won't open the lock. When this happens there may be a structural or mechanical defect with the lock. If this is the case, Sentry will repair it for free under its 1-year warranty. However, not all lock problems are mechanical or structural. It's a possibility that dirt, dust and other debris are clogging the lock. If so, there's a simple method that will open the lock in a matter of minutes.

1
Examine the letters that are engraved on your key. Check the letter engraved on the key-lock cylinder. Make sure the letter on the key and the key-lock cylinder match.
-
2
Spray the inside of the lock with WD-40. The WD-40 lubricates the lock and helps dissolve any debris that's inside.

3
Tap the lock gently with the hammer. Tapping the lock loosens up any remaining dirt, dust or other debris.

Insert the key. Turn the key clockwise. Lift the Sentry 1170 lid.
