How to Build a Key Safe

A regular safe is used to protect your valuables --- credit cards, jewelery and art --- from thieves. A key safe is a smaller version of a regular safe used to protect only your keys (and sometimes credit cards). If someone steals your keys, they have access to your house, your vehicle and even your work in some cases. A key safe is designed to prevent that from happening by keeping your keys secure.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where to put your key safe. This will depend on what type of keys are in the key safe. For instance, if all the keys in your key safe are for rooms inside your house, the key safe will typically be located in a room that doesn't have a lock (so you can always access your key safe). If your key safe holds house keys, locate the key safe outside the house, usually close to the front door.

Drill a 3/8-inch hole in the wall of the opposite the door hinge of the metal box. Drill a second 3/8-inch hole into the door. Slide your lock through these two holes, securing your safe.

    • 3

Drill three 3/8-inch holes through the back of your key safe. These are mounting holes and will be used to attach your key safe to a wall.

Screw 3-inch wood screws through the back of the safe into the wooden stud in the wall. Mount the washers and the nuts inside the metal box so they cannot be taken out without opening your key safe. Alternatively, if you mount the key safe to your front door, use heavy carriage bolts. Again, mount the washers and nuts inside the safe.
