How to Install an Electric Lock

Electric locks used in hotel, private residence and business safes offer a means of safeguarding valuable belongings and cash from both theft and fire damage. A secure functioning electric lock is one component of a secure safe. Damage to the keypad or locking mechanism makes repairs to the unit necessary. Replacement of the locking mechanism and keypad can be easily accomplished by following a few easy steps.

      Purchase a swing bolt lock kit and a keypad.

      Use the installation template from the lock kit to locate the placement of the holes to mount the lock.

      Drill and tap the holes to mount the lock assembly to the safe.

      Place electrostatic discharge wristband on wrist, ground the ESD wristband to the keypad or the safe.

      Install the keypad. Fish the keypad cable through the cable hole on the front of the safe.

      Fit the keypad over the safe door, aligning the pad with the screws' mounting holes.

      Place the screws through the keypad to mount the safe door.

      Clean the keypad housing to ensure the keypad will stay in place; removing or adjusting the keypad will cause damage to the keypad.

      Place the keypad in position and remove the adhesive backing to secure the keypad in place.

      Run the keypad cable through the back of the lock. Mount the lock flush to the safe door.

      Place three US ¼-inch screws through the lock to mount the swing bolt.

      Connect the wire from the keypad to the swing bolt lock.
