How to Hide Safes in Walls

Homeowners sometimes use wall safes to protect valuables or assets in the home rather than in a bank's safe deposit box. Hiding the safe well from view is one extra precaution the homeowner can take to ensure the safe and its contents remain protected.

Place the safe in an inconspicuous place in your home. Closets are one idea, since hanging laundry may discourage potential thieves who are looking for an easily accessible mark. But closets are also common sites. As an alternative to closets, after you've cut and placed the safe in a wall in an upstairs bedroom, measure and cut a similar hole in the back of a wardrobe. Stand the wardrobe over the hole before hanging clothing in the wardrobe, over the safe.

Cut out a wall safe space close to the floor, behind large and heavy furniture pieces such as chests, dressers, bookcases or nightstands. Thieves may be deterred by cumbersome furniture.

Place the safe in a child's room or a guest room. Once you've cut the placement for the safe, cover the location with a mirror, wall hanging, poster or similar item. Children's or guest rooms may not be the first place burglars consider when entering a home and looking for valuables.

Hang the paper template included with your purchase of the safe against the wall and use thumbtacks or double-sided tape to secure it in place. If your safe is second-hand, measure the rear of the safe and transfer it to a piece of paper, cut it out and use that as a template. Trace the inside of the template and the outside.

Hammer a small nail anywhere into the inside of the square created from the template to create a "knob" that will be used to remove the panel once you've cut it out. Saw the panel out of the innermost square with a jigsaw and pull on the nail to remove the panel.

Insert the safe into the wall space you cut out. Line up the lip of the safe up with the outer square. If there is a slight wiggle to the safe, slide wooden shims between the lip and wall to ensure it is snug. Drill the safe into place, through the holes in the lip and into the wall studs.
