How to Change the Combination on an S&G 6730

Sargent and Greenleaf makes a range of mechanical and electronic locks for safes, deposit boxes and vaults. The 6730 lock model opens via a three-digit combination entered using a mechanical dial. A "change key" was included with the safe that changes the safe combination, when necessary. You should change the combination if you suspect someone outside your family or business has access to your safe. For security reasons, you need the existing safe combination.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the lock using the existing combination, turning the dial left to the first number, right past the second number twice before stopping on the third pass then left to the final number, stopping on the second pass. Turn the dial right until it stops and pull open the door.

    • 2

Lock the door while it is open, turning the dial left through four revolutions. Re-enter the combination as in step one, this time using the "changing index" mark at roughly 11 o'clock on the dial instead of the "opening index" mark at 12 o'clock.

    • 3

Insert the thin end of the change key into the keyhole on the back of the lock. The key only fits one way, with the diamond shaped portion at the bottom. Push the key as far as it will go into the lock.

    • 4

Turn the dial left through three full revolutions, lining up the first digit of your new combination with the "changing index" mark at the fourth pass. Turn the dial right through two full revolutions, stopping at the second digit of your new combination at the third pass. Finally, turn the dial left through one rotation, stopping at the third digit of your combination at the second pass. Make sure not to set the third digit of your combination between 4 and 12 on locks splined at 50.

    • 5

Carefully move the dial 10 numbers to the right and rotate the change key in the back of the lock right through 90 degrees until it stops. Remove the change key from its hole and test your new combination, this time lining the digits up with the opening index, as normal. The new code works immediately.

    • 6

Lock and unlock the safe at least three times using the new combination with the door open. The new code sometimes takes time to bed-in to mechanical locks.
