How to Redo the Interior of a Gun Safe

Gun safes are protective devices that help keep firearms from falling into the wrong hands. They also provide a central location so guns don't get misplaced. Many safe interiors are utilitarian and can be improved upon with just a few minutes' work by the owner. Any work should always be double-checked to ensure it does not interfere with the ability of the safe to close and lock.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut and shape sheet rock to line the interior walls, ceiling and floor of the safe. This acts as a fire retardant, and adding a layer to the inside will give the safe even more protection against fire and heat.

    • 2

Cut and shape nylon floor carpet to line the interior walls of the safe. Carpeting along the walls and floor protects guns from scratches if they accidentally fall against the metal. Spray a bit of protective oil along the top of the carpet where the barrels of the long guns will rest.

String a row of white LED Christmas lights around the back corners and sides of the safe interior. Run the electric cable through the pre-cut hole in the rear. This enables you to easily see into the far corners of the safe without having to use a flashlight. Running the lights full time allows them to act as a dehumidifier while only adding a few cents a day to your electric bill. Or add an on/off switch and use the lights only when you open the safe.
