Instructions

Separate your gold and other valuables that you want to store. Decide which pieces are truly valuable and which are not. Inspect the pieces and think about cleaning and and possibly repairing any damaged pieces.

Install a floor or wall safe in a low humidity, temperature-controlled room. Improper care and handling of gold, especially gold coins and bullion, is one of the most common reasons it becomes devalued. Moisture in the air can damage the surface of gold and other precious metals. Floor and wall safe prices will vary by size and by brand, from a very small safe for around $60 to large safes that can run hundreds or thousands of dollars. You can do the installation yourself if you're handy, or you can hire someone to install it for you.

Place the gold and other valuables in containers. For gold coins, you want to ensure that the containers are air tight and moisture free. Coin slabs, which keep the coins stationary and prevent them from touching or rubbing together, are important to prevent coins from getting scratched or damaged. For jewelry, use cloth-lined containers, with separate spaces for each piece so that they are not rubbing against any other pieces. Custom Handmade Jewelry says to "store items like necklaces or bracelets that are strung by laying them down. Do not hang them, as hanging will eventually cause the stringing material to stretch and wear out, especially if that material is silk."
