Instructions

    • 1

Dig down approximately 1 foot into the soil you want to improve, breaking apart the topsoil.

    • 2

Chop the hardened clumps of soil up with the garden hoe. Chop until the clumps are fine like the rest of the soil.

    • 3

Add 3 inches of fine-grain sand to the turned and dug-up ground. The amount you use will vary, depending on the area's size.

    • 4

Cover the area with approximately 8 inches of dried peat moss.

    • 5

Add a 3-inch layer of organic garden soil from a trusted gardening shop or other source.

    • 6

Use the shovel to mix the turned soil with the different materials you just added. Mix it thoroughly, chopping into the mixture of sand, hard soil, bagged soil and peat moss. This adds aeration and drainage to the soil while lightening it. The peat moss in the soil also contains nutrients for your plants.
