How to Anchor a Safe to Concrete

Anchoring a safe reduces the chance of it being stolen during a robbery of your home. Concrete floors increase the difficulty in running fasteners through the safe and into the base material. Using fasteners specially designed for concrete eases the process of bolting the safe to the floor but specific tools are required to install the fasteners into the hard material. Selecting the correct concrete anchor and using the proper tools for the fastener increase the strength of the finished installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the safe in the desired location. Open the safe door. Slide a marker through each mounting hole located in the base of the safe. Close the door. Move the safe away from the area.

    • 2

Slide a utility knife around each marked mounting hole if carpet covers the concrete. Pull the cut carpeting from each location. Slide the safe in position. Open the door. Align the safe mounting holes with the cleared area of the concrete.

    • 3

Secure a 3/8-inch masonry bit in a hammer drill. Set the drilling depth of the drill to the depth required for a 3/8-inch wedge anchor. Slide the drill bit through a mounting hole. Drill a hole until the depth gauge contacts the inside surface of the safe floor. Drill the remaining mounting holes in an identical manner.

    • 4

Clear concrete dust from each drilled hole by sliding the end of a 3/8-inch round wire brush into the hole, twisting it 1/2 turn and pulling it rapidly from the concrete. Blow remaining dust from each hole with compressed air.

    • 5

Push the non-threaded end of a 3/8-inch wedge anchor into each cleared hole. Tap the end of each anchor with a hammer until they seat -- bottom out -- in the concrete.

    • 6

Turn the hex nut of each 3/8-inch wedge anchor clockwise with a ratchet and a 9/16-inch ratchet.
