How to Install a Gun Safe on a Wood Floor

Gun safes are a common way to store firearms and keep them safe from unwanted hands. Placing a heavy safe over a wood floor may pose problems if the floor is too weak to hold the unit. Securing the safe to the floor so that it cannot be lifted and taken away allows you to know that the firearms will remain yours.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill
  • Floor mount screws and washers
  • 2x4-inch wood stud

Instructions

    • 1

Check the flooring and wall structure to see how the house was constructed. Place the safe next to a load-bearing wall, and over a beam or column to provide an extra measure of protection against the floor being unable to handle the safe weight. If the safe is rectangular in width, distribute it's weight evenly over several joists.

    • 2

Position the anchor holes in the floor of the safe over the floor joists if possible.

    • 3

Drill through the anchor holes into the floor and joists. Slip an oversized washer on the anchor screws before screwing them through the safe floor and down into the joists.

    • 4

Nail or screw a supporting, secondary 2x4-inch wood stud joist between two joists if the anchor holes are not able to go directly into an existing joist. Saw the stud to fit to size. Cover the drilled holes with the supporting 2x4 joist so that when the screws go down into the holes they screw into the additional support.
