How to Bolt a Safe to a Basement Floor

Once you've locked the safe, as long as you've kept the combination to yourself, your belongings are likely to remain in place until you decide to unlock the safe again. Unfortunately, a patient thief may decide to steal the whole safe. As a precaution against this, most floor safe manufacturers design safes to bolt to the floor, and there's few floors in in a home better suited for this than the one in your basement. With bolts through concrete, there's little chance of a thief walking away with your enclosed possessions.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a level bar to check the floor level of the basement in the location where you wish to place the safe. You want as few gaps between the bottom of the safe and the basement floor as possible. Run the level bar across the floor with a light shining beneath it from a flashlight. Note any high or low spots. Use a concrete grinder to grind the high spots level and then vacuum up the concrete dust. Fill the low spots with self-leveling compound. Allow the compound to dry to level. Place the safe in position.

Open the safe door and remove any of the internal fixtures such as shelves. Locate the predrilled mounting holes in the safe bottom.

    • 3

Use a hammer drill to drill holes through the mounting holes into the concrete slab of the basement floor to a depth of 3 inches. Make certain to use all of the mounting holes available. Empty the drilled holes of concrete dust using the hose attachment of a vacuum.

Place the sleeve anchor bolts into each of the drilled holes and push downward until they lay flush with the bottom of the safe. Tighten the bolts with a wrench to open the anchors and secure the bolts and the safe into place.

Replace the internal fixtures of the safe and use it as you normally would.
