How to Clean Dishwasher Screens With Baked-on Scum

Newer dishwashers have large filter screens just below the spraying arms. These screens are designed to catch large food particles and keep them from getting into the dishwasher plumbing. When food falls onto the filter screen and stays there, the drying cycle can cause it to become baked on. No matter how many cycles you run, this baked-on scum won't wash away unless you remove the screen and scrub it off.

Instructions

    • 1

Take all the dishes out of the dishwasher, and pull out the lower rack completely. This gives you access to the large, round dishwasher filter screen.

    • 2

Remove the lower sprayer arm from the bottom of the dishwasher. You won't be able to access the screen without moving the arm out. Look for a release button or tab to remove it.

    • 3

Remove the dishwasher screen from the unit. In some models, the screen will pop out when you press a release button. In other models, you might need a screwdriver to remove the plastic screws that hold the screen in place.

    • 4

Take out the filter screen, and clean off any loose gunk with your gloved fingers. You may need a small object, like a toothpick or old tootbrush, to clear out all the nooks and crannies. Some units have a second, smaller fine filter underneath the larger screen. If you can, remove it and clean it, as well.

    • 5

Submerge the filter screen in a sink full of very hot, soapy water. Keep your hands gloved to protect your skin. Let the screen soak for at least 15 minutes. Add hot water as necessary. The hot water and soap will loosen the baked-on scum.

Use a scrubbing sponge to scrape away all the baked-on scum. For particularly stubborn spots, soak for another 10 minutes, and then try again. When the screen is clean, rinse it and return it to the dishwasher, following the manufacturer's instructions.
