Instructions

  1. The String System (Least Expensive/Quickest/Short Term Solution)

    • 1

Measure the space of the location where intruders could enter. You will want to use the farthest edges, as well as any common entrances (windows, doors, etc.) to the area. Be sure to add at least 2-inches to the number in order to leave room for tying off.

    • 2

Cut the cords to the needed length(s). Use a solid cord that won't snap when someone walks into it. It is also best to use a cord that is one solid, color--the darker the better. Do not use fishing line, it will break.

    • 3

Get pieces of metal with holes through the center. Large washers from the hardware store will do, but if you are really pressed for time cut soda cans in half, and carefully punch through the bottom with a pair of scissors.

    • 4

String the cans onto the cord and tie the cord to the ares that you have already chosen.

    • 5

Keep an ear out for the rustling of the cans.

The Baby Monitor (Inexpensive/Hard to Detect)

    • 6

Go to your local discount store and purchase a baby monitor, like the one parents would use, or if you already own one get it out. Put batteries in and make sure that the monitor is working.

    • 7

Use a piece of black tape to cover any display lights on the monitor. Also, if the monitor is white you may want to spray paint the monitor a dark color. Just be sure to cover the speakers, and any holes in the casing with tape before you paint.

    • 8

Place the baby monitor in an unobtrusive place in the area you wish to monitor and keep the broadcasting end with you. If the area is large, you will want to consider the use of multiple monitors.

    • 9

Listen for noises that indicate someone is in the area.

Motion Detection Light (More Expensive/Long Term)

    • 10

Go to the hardware store. Buy a motion detecting light. The choice between a wired or wireless model is a matter of personal preference and your comfort with working with wiring.

    • 11

Choose a location. This should be in the area you want to monitor--preferably a corner--and in a place with as wide a view as possible--unobstructed by walls or other large objects.

    • 12

Open the box and carefully read the manufacturers instructions on how to install and use the motion light.
