About Glass-Breaking Sensors

Function

• Glass-break sensors are audio discriminators. In other words they are designed to specifically detect the sound of glass breaking as opposed to other sounds found in a home. These detectors do not discriminate between different types of glass and a pitcher dropped on a hard surface can cause the sensors to trip if activated. When glass breakage is detected, a signal is sent to the main control panel and the alarm is activated.

Types

• Glass-breakage detectors come either hardwired or wireless. The main difference between the two types is the ease of installation and freedom of placement. With a hardwired system, it is necessary to run wires from the panel to the windows to be protected. Often times the location of the sensor on the glass may be affected by running wires. Wireless sensors simply transmit a signal to the control panel when activated. Many wireless sensors also have the ability to collapse or become dependent should the main control panel become inactive. They may be able to sound their own independent alarm rather than relying on the control panel.

Size

• Typically glass-break sensors, which are mounted directly onto a glass surface, are approximately the size of a silver dollar. They are designed to be as inconspicuous as possible. Other sensors which are mounted near glass surfaces to detect breakage are not limited to size and may be as large as a deck of playing cards. The size will also be determined by the company which installs the system. For example, a sensor from ADT may be completely different from a sensor used by Monitronics.

Considerations

• When considering glass-break detectors, look at the total amount of glass surface you wish to protect. If you have a large wall of windows it may be more practical to consider a sensor which detects through sound and may be centrally located. Choosing to mount sensors on each window could prove to be quite expensive. A security consultant will be able to recommend what he feels will be of greatest benefit to you and provide the greatest protection.

• As with any type of security system or deterrent, there will be the benefit of an added layer of protection from would-be intruders. Glass breakage is a major means of entry into a home or business. There may also be certain discounts available from insurance companies for not only having a security system but specifically having glass-break protection. These discounts can often translate into substantial savings.

Warning

• Even though glass-break protection is an essential part of a security system, do not become completely dependent on this for security. Continue to take steps such as trimming shrubs and trees away from windows, and even placing thorny or prickly bushes near windows. You should also consider what you are placing in front of a window or glass door which might tempt an intruder.
