How to Wire for Home Security Cameras

Choose the locations of your camera and your video recorder. Make sure you can route the wire inside the wall, through the attic and back down to your video recorder.

Drill a hole in the wall where you want to mount your camera. Go into the attic and drill a hole into the top of the wall above your camera location (you will fish the wire up the inside of the wall, through the hole you drilled in the top of the wall, through the attic to the location of your video recorder). Do the same thing where you will be installing the video recorder.

Send your helper to the attic and have him push his fish tape down through the hole in the top of the wall until you can see it in the hole where you will install the security camera. Use your fish tape to grab the end of his fish tape and pull one foot of the fish tape out of the hole where you will mount the camera.

Tape the Siamese cable securely to the end of your helpers' fish tape and have him pull the fish tape and cable into the attic.

Route the cable through the attic to the location of the wall at your video recorder. Have your helper run his fish tape through the hole in the top of the wall down to your video recorder. Pull the cable and fish tape out of the hole you drilled near the location of your video recorder.

Cut the cable and install BNC connectors on both ends of the cable according the connector manufacturer's specifications.

Cut the power cord which came with the camera in half. Connect the power supply to the Siamese cable at the video recorder using the insulated butt splice connectors. Connect the camera power connector on the other end using the insulated butt splice connectors. Wrap the insulated butt splice connectors and wire to seal them from moisture.

Connect the camera to the RG-59 cable using the BNC barrel and wrap it with electrical tape.

Plug the power into your camera and ensure you have a signal.
