How to Set a Midland Weather Alert

Midland hazard and weather alert radios are an important tool for providing advance warning of weather and other emergencies. They use the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Radio (NWR) system. NOAA broadcasts in the 50 states and coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and the US Pacific Territories. NOAA's website publishes the correct frequencies and codes for your area.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the AAA batteries into the radio. These are important because, although the radio will operate using household power, the batteries act as back up should the power be lost.

    • 2

Plug the AC adapter into the wall and into the back of the radio.

    • 3

Extend the antenna to its full length.

    • 4

Click the switch on the side of the radio to "On."

    • 5

Look up the channel for your area and the Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) code for your area. They are on the website. (See Resources.)

    • 6

Program the channel. Press the "Menu" button and then the "Up" arrow until the text "Channel" appears on the display. Press "Select" and press the "Up" arrow again until you hear a strong weather radio signal. Press "Select" to save that station. Then press "Menu" to exit.

    • 7

Program the SAME code. Press the "Menu" button again and then the "Up" arrow until the text "SAME SET" appears on the display. Press "Select" and then press the "Up" or "Down" button to scroll through "SINGLE," "MULTIPLE" or "ANY." Display "SINGLE" and press "Select." Enter the SAME code using the arrow buttons. The right arrow moves you to the next digit, and the "Up" and "Down" buttons are for finding the correct digit.

Press the "Menu" button. The device will go into standby mode and will alert you for the next weather, hazard or civil emergency.
