How to Find Your Code for a Home Security System

When you purchase a home security system, you are given an access code that will allow you to activate and deactivate it. The number will usually be written down on a card after your technician installs the alarm. If you lose the card, check the owner's manual. The technician may have written it down inside there as well. If you're not sure where you lost your security code, it is safest to reset the code. Your alarm company will not give you the code over the phone.

Instructions

  1. Reset the Installer Code for an Ademco Home Alarm System

    • 1

Locate the transformer. The transformer is a cube-shaped wall outlet, usually placed around the main alarm control panel.

    • 2

      Disconnect the transformer.

    • 3

Open the main control cabinet and disconnect one of the large battery terminals. Unless you have a secondary power supply, this will shut down the entire alarm system.

    • 4

Reconnect the transformer and the battery in that order.

    • 5

Go to your alarm key pad within 30 seconds and press down the * and # keys simultaneously until you see "20" displayed. At the same time, you should see "Installer Code."

    • 6

Enter your new installer code while the "20" is still on the screen. Your installer code will be four digits. The keypad will beep to acknowledge the new installer code.

    • 7

Press *99 to exit the program.

    • 8

Enter your new installer code and press 1 (off). The keypad will beep once if you have successfully changed your installer code. If it doesn't beep, repeat the process.
