Motion Sensors

• Motion sensor systems are able to identify movement in areas that are equipped with security sensors. Motion is detected by means of either radio wave signals or infrared lights, which can sense changes in heat such as body heat. Some motion sensor systems detect movement with lasers, photoelectric beams that detect the interruption of a light beam in a designated area. Other motion sensor security systems detect vibrations, similar to how a car alarm will be triggered when the car is bumped or entered by force.

  Outdoor motion sensor security systems are often used to monitor home driveways. When motion is detected, the security system activates a floodlight that shines in the area. These outdoor motion sensors typically use an infrared detection sensor that can pick up on changes in temperature.

Digital Security Systems

• Digital home security systems use digital electronics that assign security areas that will trigger an alarm unless a numeric code is entered to deactivate it. These types of home security alarms use digital keypads to allow authorized persons to enter areas that are protected without setting off an alarm. Upon entering a protected area, the entrant will need to input the numeric code into the keypad, typically within 30 seconds, or the alarm will sound. The amount of time a person is given to enter the code, however, can be set by homeowners.

Wireless Security Systems

• All modern wireless home security alarm systems have no exposed wiring. The benefit of this is that wires cannot be intentionally or accidentally pulled out, causing the security system to deactivate. Additionally, wireless systems are more flexible in terms of positioning and mobility, allowing for easy installation in any part of the home. Wireless security systems function by means of either infrared sensors, dual technology sensors, or acoustic sensors. Wireless systems are the most popular home security alarms on the market, accounting for more than 50 percent of new home alarm systems purchased.
