How to Bypass House Alarms

House alarms can be set to bypass certain zones. This is useful if you suspect trouble with a door contact and haven't had time to check it out. It's better to have most of the zones covered and skip one than to turn off the entire system. You can also use the bypass function to allow free movement while protecting certain areas. For example, you could bypass the kitchen door to the yard and keep the front door armed. This bypass allows you to move freely in and out of the yard while keeping the street perimeter protected.

Instructions

    • 1

Disable the alarm, and enter the User Settings menu. This procedure can vary on different alarm systems but usually involves pressing the "Menu" button until the "User Settings" area shows.

    • 2

Enter your master code to get into the alarm's programming. Press the "Next" button to get to the Bypass menu.

    • 3

Press the "OK" or "Enter" button when the Bypass programming option appears on the display.

    • 4

Choose the zone you want to bypass. Your installer may have programmed plain text descriptions, which makes it easy. Just choose "Bypass Kitchen Door" or whatever area you'd like to bypass. If your alarm doesn't have a plain text description, you will need to know the zone number to bypass it.

    • 5

Press the "OK" or "Enter" button, and exit the programming menu, usually by pressing "Next" until you are out of the menu.

    • 6

Set the alarm as you ordinarily would. The kitchen zone will be bypassed, and you can move freely between the yard and the house. Just remember not to leave via the front door until you've disarmed the system or bypassed the front door.
