Description of the Basic Differences Between Wired V. Wireless Security Issues

Wired or hardwired security systems have a wire going to every contact or sensor of the alarm system, while wireless systems incorporate a small transmitter at each sensor. Each of these systems can have different issues.
  1. Batteries

    • Each transmitter must have a battery to operate. Batteries can fail and must be changed. If a battery is failing, you will see a warning on the keypad indicating which sensor needs a new battery.

    Interference

    • Wireless systems can suffer from interference. This usually manifests in a device sending false alarms.

    Sensor Failure

    • Like all electronic devices, wireless sensors do sometimes fail. If a sensor fails, your alarm system will not arm and you will have to have the sensor replaced.

    Wires

    • If a wire in a wired system is damaged, your system will not arm and the wire must be replaced or repaired. However, since contacts are often wired in series, one broken wire can disable several contacts and it is often difficult to find the damaged wire.

    Lightning

    • Wires contacts can last for many years without servicing. However, wired contacts are very delicate; a lightning strike can weld a contacts together disabling your system and requiring costly replacement. This will not happen with wireless systems.

    Compared

    • Wired systems require little if any maintenance, they can last for years and there are no sensor batteries to replace while wireless systems do require periodic maintenance.
