Who Tests Security Systems?

If you have an alarm system which is being monitored by a monitoring company, such as ADT, Brinks or GE Security, you may be wondering who is responsibility for testing your system.
  1. Activation

    • Monitoring companies test your system when it initially activated. Activation occurs after you sign your contract and your communications (phone line, cellular backup) is installed. Every opening, motion, fire, glass break and other sensors are tested during this initial test.

    Certification

    • When the alarm technician tests your system, he will coordinate with the monitoring facility and certify that each sensor is functioning properly and sending the correct signals to the monitoring company.

    Periodic Testing

    • After the initial certification of your system it is your responsibility to test your system. Most monitoring companies suggest you test your system at least once each month. To test you system, call your monitoring company and tell them you want to test your system.

    The Test

    • After calling your monitoring company you should arm your system in the "away" mode and test every door, window, motion detector, smoke or fire detector and any other sensors according to your owner's manual recommendations.

    Changes

    • If you change phone companies, phone numbers, undergo construction or repair that may affect your phone line or security system, you should test the system afterward to insure it is working correctly.
