How to Set Up Home Security

Protect your property and family from intruders and burglars by setting up a home-security system. Most home-security systems immediately contact the police. Step-by-step installation can be tricky, so be sure to read the instructions on the system you purchased.

Inspect your home and determine which parts of it need security. The most important areas of the house are the doors and windows. Select a control room where you can access all the alarms in your home. Set it up by following the instructions that come with the product. If you have a wireless alarm system, place the alarm's components within the range of the main sensors. If you have a wired system, place the wires in areas where they cannot be seen; you can use an electrical tape that is of the same color as your walls. Wire an alarm to the spots you have selected. If you will be wiring larger areas of the house, such as a hallway, install motion detectors. If you have a driveway alarm, put it where it can detect an approaching car.

Connect the alarms to the doors in the lower part of your home by drilling holes for the components. There are two components, a magnet and sensor. Attach the magnet to the door frame on the top or the side where the door opens. Attach the sensor piece to the door itself. These two parts should be aligned to allow them to touch each other when you close the door. Usually, there are four holes to screw in the magnet. Look at the back of the magnet and determine how big the holes should be. Remember that the magnet and the sensor should lock together when the window or door is closed. If this is opened by an intruder, the movement of the door or window away from the magnet will trigger the alarm.

Place the motion detectors in the largest parts of your house. Pposition them in corners to cover an entire area. Make sure they are in the topmost part of the room to increase their range. Placing them high up in the corner also makes it harder for burglars or intruders to spot them. Place the trigger alarms in areas where you think anyone who wants to go inside the house would have to pass through. This can be in your backyard and your driveway. Make sure that trigger alarms are also placed in entryways and stairways. Trigger alarms are usually placed on the floor, so apply electrical tape to keep them in place and then cover with carpet. The alarm triggers when an intruder walks on the components. You can also put motion detectors in these areas. Mount them in a place where the burglar or any intruder cannot reach them.

Learn how the home security system works. You should have activation and deactivation codes. All members of the family should have these memorized.
