How to Reset a Security System

Alarm systems provide you with peace of mind but they can be frustrating. Most often, the alarm system triggers due to user error, a pet tripping a motion detector or some other inadvertent reason. After an alarm system has triggered, you typically have to reset it. If the system is not reset, you may hear beeping coming from the alarm panel or you may also notice an error message on the panel itself.

Check your home to ensure that the alarm triggered on accident or call the authorities if you are unsure as to why the alarm triggered. Always ensure the safety of your family and your home before worrying about resetting the alarm. Continue only after you are sure everything is okay.

Shut any doors or windows equipped with alarm sensors. Instruct anyone in your house to stand still if they are near motion detectors; keep pets from moving in front of motion detectors in your home. You cannot reset your system if doors or windows are open or if people are moving in front of the motion sensors.

Input your alarm system security code into your alarm panel. Press the "Enter" button or the "Arm" button: This will vary depending on your alarm system. Note that some systems require you to arm the system and to immediately disarm the system to reset it. For instructions specific to your company, consult your alarm company.
