Instructions for Putting in a Brinks ADT Home Security Battery

All Brinks and ADT security systems have a backup battery. The backup battery protects your home during power outages and is therefore considered a crucial home-security component. Backup batteries typically last from 3 to 5 years. If your battery is failing there will usually be a "Low Battery" indication on your keypad. Replacing the backup battery is fairly easy and can be done in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your monitoring company (Brinks or ADT) and tell them to place your system "on test." When your system is on test the monitoring company will not respond to any alarms while you are replacing your battery.

    • 2

Find the control panel for your alarm system. This is a metal box which is usually located in your basement, laundry room or master bedroom closet.

    • 3

Disconnect the power from your alarm system by unplugging the power supply or turning the circuit breaker off.

    • 4

Open the control panel with a screwdriver or a key if your unit has a lock.

    • 5

Locate the battery. Disconnect the red and black leads coming from the alarm system's main board and remove the battery.

    • 6

Mark your replacement battery using the felt marker with the current date. Place the new battery in the control-panel box and attach the red and black wires, making sure you follow the polarity markings on the top of the battery (connect the red wire to the terminal marked with red or a plus sign).

    • 7

Close the control panel and reapply the power.

    • 8

Call your monitoring company and have them take your system out of test.
