How to Make a Trip Alarm

Trip alarms detect intruders by using string or wire that is activated when someone disturbs the wire or string. The alarms may be audio devices, which create noise, or visual devices, which light up. Trip-wire configurations can be as complex as needed, but basic trip alarms can be useful. Basic trip alarms are often used in outdoor sporting events, such as paintball, to alert you to advancing opponents.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location you want to monitor. Insert a sturdy branch into the ground at one side of the location and insert another stick into the ground at the other side.

    • 2

Tie fishing line around the first stick three to four inches above the ground. Stretch the fishing line across the walkway and tie the other end to the second stick, ensuring that the line is taunt. Remove the remaining fishing line with scissors.

    • 3

Thread a six-inch length of fishing line through the pull tabs on three empty aluminum cans. Tie the free ends of the line into a knot to form a loop. Repeat the process to tie up three aluminum cans for the other side.

    • 4

Tie a set of aluminum cans to the fishing line near the sticks on each side.
