Wipe down the smoke detector every week to remove dust and dirt that might clog the vents. Use a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth.
Test the detector once a month by pressing the test button. If the alarm sounds, it is functioning properly. If the alarm isn't functioning properly, the alarm will not sound. Replace the batteries and try the alarm again. If the alarm still doesn't sound, then you need to replace it.
Do not place the smoke alarm near areas where smoke is bound to appear, such as next to stoves, near fireplaces and in areas where candles or incense is used.
Never paint smoke alarms. Paint can clog the vents.
Press the "hush" button when there is a controlled fire or steam setting off the alarm.
Cover the smoke alarm with a plastic bag whenever you are going to work around the smoke alarm with dust and other debris flying around.
