Can I Use the Brinks System Without Service?

With ADT's purchase of Brinks, now called Broadview, in 2010, a large percentage of homes that have a security system are using ADT for their home security monitoring. These systems are purchased with a contract for monitoring service and installed by ADT or Brinks personnel. As of 2009, 32.1 million people have their homes monitored for security reasons, according to the Electronic Security Association.
  1. Types of Systems

    • The standard Brinks security system is hard wired. It has a centrally located security panel that connects to sensors in doors and windows and in some cases, fire alarms. Brinks also offers a wireless system that allows for easier installation and more comprehensive monitoring. Also offered is an online monitoring system that allows you to view your home's security status via a secured Web page.

    Monitoring

    • All Brinks home security systems come with a monitoring service. A home phone line is required to monitor service. If an alarm is tripped, the signal is sent through the phone line to the monitoring station. If a phone system is not connected, the security system will not be monitored and will not be able to alert the authorities if there is an emergency.

    If Service is Cut Off

    • If the monitoring service is cut off, the Brinks system will still chirp if a door or window is open. You also will still be able to set the alarm, and the alarm will go off but no signal will be sent to the monitoring station. You also will no longer be able to access your online monitoring service.
