How to Change a Battery in an Alarm System

Your home alarm system is a sufficient safety measure that stands between you and possible robbery. A home alarm system will keep watch on your house while you are away or sleeping and will notify local authorities upon unauthorized entry. These alarm systems have emergency standby batteries that will keep the system functioning if power cannot be provided via electricity. Keeping these batteries up to date is just as important as keeping smoke detector batteries up to date.

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire a replacement battery that fits the standards of your specific alarm system. Consult your owner's manual for information on what kind of battery you should purchase.

    • 2

Place your alarm system on test mode via your central control panel before replacing the battery. This will avoid an unwarranted alarm trip.

    • 3

Unplug the system's transformer. The transformer is a white, blue or beige box that may be plugged into an outlet near the control panel, hardwired into the circuit breaker or plugged into an outlet that isn't controlled by a switch.

    • 4

Unplug your battery from the circuit board. Take note of the positive and negative contacts so you know where they are when you connect the new battery.

    • 5

Install your new battery by fastening both the positive and negative contacts to those on the battery. Plug in the system's transformer again. Put your alarm back in normal operating mode if necessary or call your alarm company to inform a representative that you are done with the battery change.
