How to Change a Battery in an ADT Home Security System

Your ADT home security system uses a battery pack to keep the alarm system powered in the event of a power outage. When a "Low battery" message on your display panel illuminates, it is necessary to change the battery pack. ADT recommends calling a service professional to change the battery pack every four years. You can change the battery pack yourself and save money on a service call. Most home improvement centers and battery supply stores carry the battery pack necessary for your ADT home alarm system. It is important, however, to take the old one with you to ensure that you purchase the right size for your alarm.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the two tabs on the top of the ADT home security keypad panel. Press the tabs down with a small flat-head screwdriver. Pull the top of the keypad panel away from the housing and allow it to hang open.

    • 2

Find the battery pack inside the housing that mounts to the wall. The battery back resembles four AA batteries wrapped in plastic with a wire connector. Pull the wire connector off the battery pack.

    • 3

Pull the battery pack out of the housing with your fingers. Take the battery pack to a battery outlet store or home improvement center. Purchase the same battery pack you have to ensure proper operation. The voltage and the amperage on the new pack must match the old.

    • 4

Place the new battery pack inside the battery holding clip in the alarm housing. Push the wire connector over the battery pack.

    • 5

Position the keypad panel over the housing and press until the top tabs lock into place.
