How to Remove a Smoke Alarm Cover

Smoke alarms are essential for protecting you and your family from smoke inhalation due to fires and faulty home appliances. Check your smoke alarms often to make sure they are working properly and the batteries are charged. If they are not working properly, you'll have to remove the smoke alarm cover to inspect the item or change the battery. Each smoke alarm has a unique design, but most covers come off in a similar way.

     Place a ladder underneath the smoke alarm.

     Climb up the ladder so that you can reach the smoke alarm and work on it comfortably.

     Unlock the smoke alarm cover. If the cover has tabs, depress all tabs at the same time until you hear the smoke alarm click. If the smoke alarm has screws, unscrew them with a screwdriver and set them aside. If the smoke alarm has no tabs or screws, twist it counterclockwise until you hear it click. Remove the cover.
