Crime monitoring software is much more beneficial than the traditional camera and tape recorder method. For one, you will not need to archive tapes as your software will store the recordings of your surveillance footage. Another benefit would be the quality of the video; typically the digital software will give you a better picture than a video tape.
Most security software programs will come standard with the option to be able to save all surveillance camera recordings on your hard drive. Another standard feature is being able to view multiple cameras at one time. Some optional features include detecting alarms, taking screenshots or even automatically contacting your local police department.
The prices can vary depending on how advanced of a system you require. If you just have a few security cameras, you can settle for a basic system. If you require several cameras and have additional alarms in your system (i.e., window alarms, fire alarms) you will, of course, end up spending more money. As of December 2010, a basic software program can cost as little as $20 and the more advanced programs can range upwards of $500.
