How to Install a Smart Key

A smart key is a deadbolt that attaches to the door and provides added security for your home. You have the ability to install a smart key on your front door, providing a do-it-yourself project that is easy to accomplish. The smart key allows you to rekey the deadbolt without removing the lock, resulting in a brand-new deadbolt. Installing a smart key may seem like a daunting task, but all you need to do it successfully is the right tool.

Instructions

  1. Installing a Smart Key

    • 1

Install the latch onto the door. The latch is the piece that goes into the door; it is used to lock the door in place. Make sure that you measure the length between the edge of the door and hole that will be for the lock. You can use a measuring tape to determine the length. Insert the latch and secure it with two screws, one on the top and one on the bottom.

    • 2

Attach the exterior part of the lock. Position the round shield over the hole that will contain the lock. Once the shield is in place, you can place the smart key lock on the door, ensuring that the torque blade is aligned through the crank of the latch.

    • 3

Attach the interior piece into the door. Make sure that the latch bolt is extended before attaching the piece. Secure it with two screws, one on the left and one on the right.

    • 4

Install a strike plate on the latch to complete the smart key. Place the plate over the latch and secure it with four pilot hole screws.

    Rekeying the Smart Key

    • 5

Open the door away from the door frame. The door needs to be open for the rekeying process to work. Insert the key that works with the lock.

    • 6

Rotate the key one-quarter turn in a horizontal position. Once the key is in a horizontal position, insert the smart key tool firmly into the designated area. Continue by removing the smart key tool.

    • 7

Remove the key from the horizontal position. Do not turn the key. Continue by inserting the new key into the horizontal position. Make sure that you do not turn away from the horizontal position.

    • 8

Rotate the new key to a one-quarter turn in a vertical position. Do not remove the key from this position.

    • 9

Turn the new key back to the horizontal position and try to remove the key. If you cannot remove the key, you have rekeyed successfully. If you can remove the key, repeat the Step 1 through Step 4 until it is successful. After the test, turn the key to the vertical position to remove it.
