How to Monitor Security Cameras From Home

A home security system must monitor entranceways into your home if it is to do its job effectively. To monitor security cameras from within the house, use wireless cameras connected to a wireless receiver that you can watch on your TV. You can purchase a wireless video home security kit from an electronics store and set it up to provide security monitoring that you can watch while at home.

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver

      Purchase a wireless home video security video kit that comes with two wireless video cameras and a wireless video receiver.

      Stand a ladder against the wall that faces the front door. Screw a camera mount onto the wall with wood screws and a Phillips screwdriver.

      Mount a wireless video camera to the camera mount with metal screws and the Phillips screwdriver. Aim the camera towards the front door before tightening the screws all the way down.

      Extend an external antenna if there is one on the camera. Set the "channel number" switch on the side or bottom of the camera to one of the numbers using the tip of a flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver.

      Connect one end of an extension cord to the power cord attached to the camera. Plug the other end of the power cord into a wall socket for power.

      Repeat this entire procedure to set up another wireless video camera on the wall facing the back door or a window facing the backyard. Set the "channel number" switch on the side or bottom of the other camera to a different number than the camera that is facing the front door.

      Place the video receiver next to a TV. Plug the receiver into a wall socket for power. Connect a Composite video cable between the "video out" jack of the receiver and a "video in" jack on the TV. Turn the TV on with its remote control. Press "Menu." Select the "Composite" video input that the cable is attached to. Press "Menu."

      Turn the video receiver on. Extend an external antenna, if one is present. Turn the slider switch or knob to select among the various channels the wireless video cameras are using. View the video feed from any of the wireless video cameras on the TV.
