How to Change a Battery in a Brinks Home Security System

A Brinks home security system alerts security personnel when the homeowner is away and there is an outside intrusion. A battery backup in the security control panel assures that there is power regardless of a power blackout or an attempt by someone to turn the system off from outside the home. Regular battery replacement ensures that the battery backup is always ready to go into effect. A replacement battery and a few tools are all that is needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the local phone number for the Brinks security office that your Brinks home security system contacts in case of an emergency. Verify your protected, private security information with the Brinks security person. Tell the Brinks security person that you are changing out a battery in your Brinks home security system, so no action should be taken when the system goes "off-line" for a couple of minutes.

    • 2

Unplug the power cord attached to the Brinks control box from the wall socket. Open the Brinks control box using a key if one is present, or by removing the screws on the side of the box with a Phillips screwdriver and then pulling the cover plate off.

    • 3

Loosen the two screw connectors on the top of the battery with the jaws of a pliers. Remove the two screw connectors with your fingers. Pull the two wires off the screws. Remove the battery and dispose of it properly.

    • 4

Place the replacement battery in the battery compartment. Place the screw hole on the end of the red cable over the red-colored screw contact on the top of the battery. Place the screw hole on the end of the black cable over the black-colored screw contact on the top of the battery. Place the two screw connectors on the two screws and tighten them down with your fingers. Further tighten the two screw connectors with the pliers.

Close and lock the control panel or reattach the panel and the screws, depending upon how it was opened. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

    • 6

Call the Brinks security office. Confirm that your Brinks home security system is functioning correctly so that it can be monitored again.
