How to Change an Alarm Code

Hundreds of types of alarm systems are available to protect your home or business and no two are alike. Most alarm systems store multiple codes for distribution among employees or family members and require a "master code" before you can make any changes. Most alarm systems make it easy for authorized users to change their alarm code via the control panel. You might want to change a code if you hire new staff or suspect your code has fallen into the wrong hands. Allow roughly five minutes for this task.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter "Program," "Code" or "Setup" mode on your alarm system.

    • 2

Enter your master alarm code using the number keypad. This code is supplied with your system and can be in excess of four digits.

    • 3

Enter or select the number of the access code you want to change. For example, alarm code number "04."

    • 4

Enter a replacement alarm code. This code should usually be around four digits long but will vary depending on your system.

    • 5

Confirm the code and exit the menu. You may be prompted to assign a "clearance" level to the code, which restricts the changes the employee or family member can make to the system. Your new code will work immediately.
